The popular comic and Law & Order: SVU actor Richard Belzer has passed away. Bill Scheft, a former writer for The Late Show with David Letterman, told The Hollywood Reporter that Belzer had passed away. He had many health problems, and his dying words were “Fk you, motherf*er,” according to Scheft, who spoke to THR.
At his residence in Bozouls, southwest France, Belzer passed away early on Sunday. He was 78. The actor’s cause of death has not yet been determined.
Before moving on to Law & Order: SVU, where the part may have gained the most notoriety, Belzer starred as the adored Detective John Munch in 1993’s Homicide: Life on the Streets. Until 2013, Belzer played Munch on the enduring series. Belzer played the part for a total of 23 years across 12 different TV shows, including The X-Files, The Beat, The Wire, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, in addition to the original Law & Order and Trial by Jury. In 2016, he made his final appearance as John Munch in a guest role on Law & Order: SVU.
Belzer began his career as a comic, serving as a warm-up act on Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980 and as a featured performer on the National Lampoon Radio Hour. He also had a few lesser parts in movies like Fame (1980), Author! Author! (1982), and Scarface (1984). (1983). Also, he appeared in a few TV episodes as a guest star, such as Moonlighting, Miami Vice, and Tattingers. Belzer also appeared frequently in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and the 1991 version of The Flash.
Belzer, a published novelist, called his acting career to a close in 2016.
Belzer was recognised by his comic peers after hearing of his passing, including Marc Maron and Laraine Newman of Saturday Night Live.
